NEW SCHOLARS DISSERTATION MENTORING WORKSHOP
Purpose of the Workshop
The New Scholars Dissertation Mentoring Workshop (NSDMW) is a unique opportunity for doctoral students (Ph.D. and Ed.D.) to discuss their dissertation research in small groups of experienced scholars as well as with peers with similar topical or methodological interests. Participants receive feedback on the design, data collection and/or analysis of their dissertation. Complimentary luncheons after the workshops provide opportunities for all participants to meet and exchange ideas.
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
To apply for the workshop, you must fit all of the following criteria:
- a student member of CIES, registered or planning to register for CIES 2020 Miami;
- a doctoral student (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) between the dissertation proposal stage and mid writing stage (analysis, but not yet defended);
- have not previously participated in a NSDMW; and,
- be committed to participate in all aspects of the NSDMW. Students are required to read and engage substantively with other participants’ work both prior to and during the workshop.
All proposals should contribute to the advancement of theory, practice, methodology, or fieldwork in comparative and international education.
Proposal Criteria
To participate in this workshop, you must apply in advance by submitting a proposal abstract of 750 words through the All Academic proposal submission system by Wednesday, September 25, 2019. The abstract must include:
- the name of the university you attend and your dissertation faculty advisor (please do not include your own name).
- the objectives/purposes of the research;
- the research question(s) that the dissertation addresses;
- a thesis statement concerning what the dissertation expects readers/audience to know, believe, and/or understand;
- the perspective(s), theoretical/conceptual framework, including connections to the literature or to previous experiences related to the dissertation;
- the modes of inquiry, methods, and techniques used/planned to attain the objectives or purposes, and answer the main questions posed in the dissertation;
- evidence to support conclusions (if this stage of your dissertation has been reached), with indications of how research will extend understanding of the issue; and,
- a statement as to whether you are in the dissertation proposal, data collection, data analysis, or beginning writing stage of your program. You should be far enough into your dissertation process to benefit from mentor/peer feedback. You should not be near or at the dissertation defense stage.
These criteria are different from CIES general proposals criteria. However, your research must relate to the field of comparative and international education. Please note that participants who apply for this workshop will not be submitted also to the general pool. You may apply to the general pool with a separate proposal.
Time/Format of Workshop
Doctoral students will be selected to participate in a NSDMW session, which will take place one full morning, either on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday during CIES 2020 in Miami. Each workshop group will have 4-6 students and 1-3 faculty or professional mentors.
PLEASE NOTE: You may apply to participate in the NSDMW as well as make another submission for a panel, paper, or poster presentation in the general pool. If you apply to participate in the NSDMW and submit a proposal to present at CIES 2020 Miami, please request that your presentation not be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings as this is when the NSDMW take place. This also allows us to assign you to the most appropriate group relative to your topic.
If you are selected to participate in the workshop, you will be required to:
- Submit a draft doctoral dissertation synopsis of no more than 2,500 words and three open-ended questions by Monday , February 3, 2020. Your dissertation synopsis will be circulated to members of your assigned group. The organizers of the NSDMW will assign you to a group based on your initial 750-words submission;
- Read and provide comments on the synopses of 2-5 other students in your group, approximately three weeks prior to the CIES conference;
- Participate from the beginning to the end of the session on the day of your NSDMW session; and,
Provide an update about your research and discuss the work of others in your group. There is no formal presentation as a part of the NSDMW.
NEW SCHOLARS PUBLICATION MENTORING WORKSHOP
Purpose of the Workshop
The New Scholars Publication Mentoring Workshop (NSPMW) is a unique opportunity for final stage and recent Ph.D. and Ed.D. graduates as well as early career professionals to discuss a paper that they have developed for publication and would like to refine with experienced scholars and peers. Participants will be provided feedback, particularly on the paper sections related to theoretical framework, methodology and findings. The NSPMW will also contribute to strengthening links among peers in other international education programs.
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
To apply for the workshop, you must be:
- A Ph.D. or Ed.D. Candidate in the final dissertation writing stage or a recent graduate/early career professional (who graduated not more than 4 years ago);
- A member of CIES, registered/planning to register for CIES 2020 Miami; and,
- Not have previously participated in a Publication Mentoring Workshop. Participants must be committed to read and engage substantively with other group members’ publication draft both prior to and during the workshop.
- All proposals should contribute to the advancement of theory, practice, methodology or fieldwork in comparative and international education.
Proposal Criteria

- an indication of whether you are a final stage doctoral student or recent graduate at the time of the conference. To enable a blind review process please, do not mention your name;
- the objectives/purposes of the research;
- the main research question(s);
- theoretical or conceptual framework used and its connection to the literature;
- research design, data collection methods and analytic techniques; and,
- results and evidence to support conclusions.
These criteria are different from CIES general proposals criteria. However, your research must relate to the field of comparative and international education. We urge you to do so because this is when the NSPMW take place. This is also useful in assigning you to the most appropriate group with respect to your topic.
If you are selected to participate in the workshop:
- You will be required to submit a publication draft of not more than 8000 words, excluding references.
- You will be required to submit 3-5 open-ended questions by Monday, February 3, 2020 that you have regarding your publication draft. The publication draft will be circulated to all members of the New Scholars Publication Mentoring Workshop.
- Please keep in mind that prior to the NSPMW, you will be required to read all the papers in your assigned group (not more than four) and to prepare comments on the questions your group members pose about their draft.
TRAVEL GRANTS
A limited number of travel grants are available to students selected to participate in the NSDMW and NSPMW. All students selected to participate in the Workshops will be considered for the travel grant unless they have secured other funding. All participants, with or without a travel grant, will have the same opportunity to interact with other doctoral students and CIES faculty. After acceptance to the Workshops, participants will be sent a survey regarding eligibility for travel grants. The CIES New Scholars Committee will make decisions on the award allocation based on merit and information received through the surveys. Unfortunately, due to budget limitations, not all participants can receive travel grants.
There are three types of travel grants:
- Travel grants awarded on the basis of merit (i.e. proposals with the highest review scores);
- Travel grants awarded to students from under-represented institutions at CIES, based on financial need; and
- Travel grants awarded to students from majority world contexts with substantial financial need.
